Last night's new Bad Batch was written by showrunner Jennifer Corbett and felt like an episode of Rebels in the worst way.
One of the most prevalent criticisms of Rebels and Resistance is that the heroes tended to have an easy time making the Empire look like a bunch of dinks. The first season of Rebels basically made the Empire look like the Keystone Kops. The writers were obliged to veer away from that shit when James Earl Jones guest starred in season two but even Vader looked like schmuck by the end.
Last night we had little tykes Hera (Vanessa Marshall) and Omega (Michelle Ang) stealing a shuttle and destroying half an Imperial base without breaking a sweat. It was only a few episodes ago Omega could barely fire her magic bow, now she talks to Hera like a seasoned veteran.
The Batch (Dee Bradley Baker) busting Hera's parents out of prison was at least believable since they are a trained military squad. Though that didn't help the Imperial clone who decided he was changing sides. What does he do? He walks up to a line of troopers with guns pointing at him. As if that weren't bad enough, he asks his comrades to show if they agree with him, at which point they all . . . hand over their weapons and surrender. Nice work, guys. Might as well send the Judea People's Front's suicide squad.
Well, we might get some more decent episodes if they can keep the likes of Jennifer Corbett away from the show.
The Bad Batch is available on Disney+.
