Tom Skerritt has passed away at 93. Few actors could so quickly establish cool and authority in a scene. It did it in countless films, in Cronenberg's adaptation of The Dead Zone, in Top Gun. But he could also be divertingly weird, as in his role in Steel Magnolias, or creepy and pathetic, as in Poison Ivy. Of course, most people will remember him best as Dallas, the captain of the Nostromo from 1979's Alien.
He won an Emmy for his work on Picket Fences and had a very long and active career, ranking among the few actors whose face and voice will be recognisable to most people. He even had a jingle.
