Animals are Violent

How do you make a community work when it's composed of different species with vastly different physical characteristics? It can be tricky but the citizens of 2021's Zootopia make it work. Mostly. In any case, it's one of the boldest films Disney has ever made, second perhaps only to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I really don't have much to add to my 2016 review of the film. But having since that time seen the films leading up to it I can marvel all the more at some of the risks it took. In particular, the early scene where Judy is pinned by a fox and gets her face slashed. It's easy to see why the scene is necessary for the story, showing the trauma Judy has to overcome in order to treat foxes fairly. At the same time, the hornet's nest of issues related to sex and race makes it astounding the suits at Disney allowed it. I wonder if it could even be done to-day, just six years later. Thank goodness for Japan, a country which has produced Beastars, a riff on Zootopia that explores the sexual implications of the premise. Zootopia is available on Disney+. ...
