Crypt Justice

It's funny how the anti-heroes of Tales from the Crypt are so often trying to get rich quick. The second season, which premiered in April, 1990, stars Demi Moore as a gold digger who marries a slob played by Jeffrey Tambor. She does this after a fortune teller foresees Tambor getting an inheritance and then dying shortly thereafter. The episode is based on an issue of the comic Shock SuspenStories, published in 1953. Interestingly, the adaptation sets the story in the '50s instead of updating it for a contemporary setting, as other episodes do. The two stars, particularly Moore, are effective and the episode's a nice little slice of demented fate.

Tambor apparently wore a fat suit for the episode with unpleasant facial prosthetics, all to show how implausible it is for the beautiful young Demi Moore to be attracted to him for real. But in the horror tradition, Moore's character receives a comeuppance far more severe than she likely deserves.

Tales from the Crypt is available on Shudder.
