I dreamt last night about a late nineteenth century Dutch cargo ship filled with bright white little corridors. The captain was a pale, tall young woman who wore a short, pixie cut blonde wig she took off at night to reveal longer than shoulder length brown hair. In my dream, she woke up in the middle of the night in her cabin which was below deck, mid level for some reason. It was hard to see in her room but somehow enough moonlight got in so her vision was just barely able to adjust to see everything in dim blue and black. She took a robe off a hook on the bulkhead and crept outside where the vague shapes of crewmembers could be seen sleeping. She went upstairs and got three ice cubes from a box. Then she came back downstairs, went into her cabin and in the dim blue she could just barely see that someone was in her cot. As she focused on the sleeping person, she realised in was a copy of herself with her eyes open, staring back at her and smiling. I was overcome by the feeling of being in the wrong place, related to the conviction that the captain shouldn't have her cabin amidships.
The news yesterday was that Stephen Colbert is replacing David Letterman as the host of The Late Show. I love Stephen Colbert but I don't see this working out. If Conan O'Brien was too weird for the mainstream late night audience, I don't know what chance Colbert stands. Anyway, I tend to think of him as more of a comedic actor than a host.
David Letterman's World Wide Pants company produced the Strangers With Candy movie, a series I've been thinking about lately.
